This oil by Carl Ahrens measures 23 x 32 inches and was painted between 1908 and 1911, likely in Toronto or Leith, Ontario. It originally belonged to General Malcolm S. Mercer and was exhibited in the Public Reference Library (Toronto) in October of 1911. It is now part of a private collection.
I have seen the painting in person, and it is most unusual. In order to appreciate this painting, the viewer must have patience. She must wait for her vision to adjust to the darkness, much as she would do when walking outside at night. Suddenly details start to form in the dark, stars appear, etc. While I personally prefer Carl's brighter paintings, I do appreciate how difficult it would be to achieve this affect without making the painting look "muddy" in any way.
