This oil by Carl Ahrens was part of a group of paintings called the Mercer Collection (mostly painted between 1908 and 1911) but may have been painted as early as 1898. There was a painting with this same title exhibited at the 26th Annual Exhibition for the Ontario Society of Artists at the Art Gallery of Toronto. It was priced at $200 at that time. I have found no record of a painting by that name being exhibited between 1898 and 1911, in Canada or in the United States (specifically at Roycroft). In any case, the 1898 painting, or one with an identical title (unlikely) was exhibited at the Public Reference Library (Toronto) in October of 1911. This painting is now part of the collection of Malcolm Smith Mercer Hamilton.
