The Missions of California
In the summer of 1906, Carl Ahrens and his new wife, Madonna, traveled up the coast of
California by covered wagon. Carl had received a commission from author George
Wharton James to paint all the old missions. James intended to use the paintings as

illustrations in a book he was writing on the subject. The earthquake nearly backrupted
him, though, and he was only able to buy a handful of the paintings. These are the ones I
know about, but Carl may have completed others.
